The Mystic Mountain is one of the most famous objects found within the Carina Nebula. Seen here in a composite image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, this section of the nebula is one of a series of images taken for Hubble's twentieth anniversary. Like other stellar jets in the Carina and other nebulas, this rapidly expanding cloud of gas and interstellar dust is like a cocoon for a new generation of young stars being formed within its confines. As the stars within grow and change, they fire off jets of gas that expand and push the dust and clouds. These gas jets are what give these columns within the nebula their wispy, chaotic shapes.
